Bangladesh Floods July to August 2016

3.7 Million people have been affected by severe flooding caused by monsoon rainfall across Bangladesh. 106 fatalities have currently been confirmed. 19 districts in total have been affected since July. 70% of the populations have been affected in the worst impacted districts of Jamalpur, Kurigram, Sirajgonj, Tangail, Gaibanda.

According to official reports, 7400 people are currently living in 69 flood shelters after 16770 houses were destroyed or damaged by the floods. 65156 houses were also washed away or damaged due to erosion on the riverbank.

Aid including drinking water and food is currently in desperate need in these areas. According to reports aid efforts are being slowed down by flooded roads and railways. The situation is currently ongoing.

Bangladesh is well known for the devastating floods that take place affecting most of the country due to the low lying land which is affected by both river and coastal flooding.

According to the flood forecast, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers are rising and will continue to rise over the next 48 hours and the Ganges-Padma and SurmaKushiyara rivers are falling and forecast to keep falling over the next 72 hours.
