Recent events/disasters in brief


Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Flooding:

Over 60 people have been killed, 15 missing and over 44,000 displaced after heavy rainfall led to flooding in North Hamgyong Province on 29 August. An estimated 300mm of rail fell over just two day causing the river Tumen and its tributaries to flood. An estimated 4300 houses have been damaged and over 4400 destroyed.

Peru Earthquake:

9 people were killed, 40 injured and 1564 affected after an earthquake measuring magnitude 5.4 with a depth of only 10 km struck Peru on 14 August. The earthquakes epicenter was located 7 km west of the town of Chivay. 383 houses have collapsed and 1074 severely damaged.

Nepal floods and landslides:

120 people have been killed, 51 inured and 18 are missing by landslides and floods triggered by heavy rainfall in Nepal. According to ECHO, 6280 families have been evacuated and 2100 houses have been damaged or destroyed. Floods and landslides have occurred across 25 districts according to IFRC.


Myanmar floods:

Heavy rainfall has led to flooding in Myanmar since June. 5 people have been killed and 377,000 people have been displaced across 6 states.


Philippines floods and landslides:

23 people have been killed, 12 injured and 3 are missing after devastating flooding affected parts of Philippines in August. The situation is currently ongoing. 1,263,098 have been affected by the floods and landslides and 5479 people are currently seeking shelter in 60 evacuation centres.


Hurricane Earl:

Formed on 2 August, Hurricane Earl was responsible for 67 fatalities including 13 in Dominican Republic and 54 in Mexico. 10 people were also reported missing in Mexico. The Hurricane made landfall on 4 August causing floods and displacing over 1000 people in Belize.  Maximum wind speeds recorded when it made landfall in Belize was 130 km/h (80 mph).

In Mexico heavy rainfall from the hurricane caused landslides which were responsible for the 54 fatalities. Hurricane Earl weakened and dissipated on 6 August after making landfall south of Veracruz.
