The largest earthquake to occur in Tanzania in recent times was a magnitude 7.2 in July 1919. The earthquake was located near Lake Tanganyika.

10 April marks the 200th anniversary of the VEI 7 Tambora eruption in 1815. An estimated 11,000 people died directly from the impact of the eruption and an estimate total of 71,000 people died from both primary and secondary causes.

The Indian Ocean tsunami on 26th December 2004 claimed nearly 280,000 lives and displaced thousands. The tsunami was caused by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake on the Sunda Trench. Fatalities occurred in 14 countries including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Somalia, Myanmar, Maldives, Malaysia, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Yemen, Madagascar and Seychelles.

One of the most flood protected countries in the world is the Netherlands. The entire coastline are integrated into flood protection measures and plans.

In 2014 the 'Boxing Day' tsunami killed over 230,000 people in 14 countries. Waves measured up to 30 metres (100 feet). The earthquake which triggered the tsunami measured 9.1.

The largest recorded earthquake was in Chile in 1960, it measured a magnitude 9.5. In comparison the 2004 Boxing Day earthquake in Sumatra measured 9.1 and the Great Alaska earthquake in 1964 measured 9.2.

Typhoon Haiyan was the strongest tropical cyclone to ever make landfall in recorded history in the world with winds of up to 195mph (314 km/h).

The highest wind speed measured for a tornado is 318 mph (509km/h). The F5 tornado struck Oklahoma City on 3 May 1999. This was also the highest wind speed measured on Earth.
