Torrential rain triggered floods and landslides, which killed 12 people in southern Brazil in April. Official reports claim that the victims killed were from the towns of Igrejinha, Fazenda Vila Nova and Sapucaia do Sul.
Rescue workers tried to search for missing people amongst the devastation, while an evacuation was ordered in the surrounding areas believed to be at risk. An estimated 100,000 people were also left without power in Porto Alegre. Seven cities were affected and thousands of people were made homeless.
A similar event in January killed over 800 people and 21,000 made homeless in Rio de Janeiro.
