An earthquake measuring 6.7 struck the Chile on 16 March 2014. The earthquake which was downgraded from a magnitude 7.0 by the USGS was located at a depth of 20 km and the epicentre was 60 km WNW of Iquique. More than 100,000 people were evacuated from coastal areas due to the threat of a tsunami. Numerous aftershocks have followed.
No fatalities of major damage was reported.
