Tanzania Floods

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has triggered floods in Tanzania killing 2 people and leaving thousands homeless.

Hundreds of homes have been destroyed leaving the population homeless and seeking shelter in temporary accommodations such as churches. Farms and crops have also been destroyed and numerous livestock killed. The floods caused the derailment of a train in the Dodoma Region, causing the death of 2 people.

The Arusha Region has been the worse hit with homes in the villages in Themi, Simba and Bwawani being destroyed or damaged. Aid Agencies including the Tanzania Red Cross are responding.

According to reliefweb in the Kilosa, Mvomero and Gairo Districts;

  • 13,557 people have been affected or displaced
  • 2922 houses have been flooded
  • 739 houses have been destroyed
  • 402 houses have been partially damaged
  • 9 roads/bridges have been affected
  • 14 School/social amenities have been affected
  • 1059 acres of farms have been destroyed
  • 5808 livestocks have been affected
