Devastating floods have been affecting countries across Europe including Italy, France and Switzerland. The floods have caused extensive damage including inundation of farm land and roads, disruption to infrastructure including power lines and landslides.
A landslide as a result of the heavy rainfall
claimed two fatalities including a 70 year old man and his 16 year old
granddaughter. A further 2 people died as a result of landslides in the Davesco-Soragno area of Switzerland, located near Lugano. Another 4 people
were injured from the same event. The total death toll from floods in Switzerland
and Northern Italy has increased to 15. A 67 year old
man is also missing near Genoa, when he was swept away by flood water.
More than a years worth of rain has been received
in 2 weeks in both these countries causing river and lake levels to rise
rapidly. Although the rain has now stopped, river levels continue to rise in
response to the previous days of rain. Clean-up operations are now also
underway.
