51 people have been killed by a
landslide in the village of Jemblung
located in Central Java. 15 people have also injured, of
which 11 are serious. 105 houses, numerous roads and bridges have been
destroyed and 800 people have been evacuated.
The landslide occurred on Friday 12th
December as a result of torrential rainfall over the past few days. According to
reports the landslide is over 6 metres deep in some locations.
Rescue efforts have been on occasions,
hampered by further rainfall over the last few days. 2000 rescuers have been
digging through the debris to find victims that are missing. The death toll is unfortunately
likely to rise since it is unlikely that further survivors will be found.
