The latest report from
United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tanzania states that 170 injured by the
earthquake on Saturday are currently hospitalised. The number of fatalities
stands at 16. Funerals of the victims were held yesterday. Photos of these will
not be included on this blog as respect to the victims and their families.
It is now estimated that
840 buildings have been destroyed and 1264 damaged. Some of these buildings are
also classed as unsafe. Electricity has been partly cut off to ensure safety.
3 schools have been
destroyed, forcing students to sleep outside. Police stations have also been
destroyed.
The number of displaced
by the earthquake is currently unknown. The Regional Commissioner estimates
that 3000 households will need temporary shelter. The report also indicates
that there is a food shortage for those who have been displaced.
The figures are likely to
change as a full damage assessment is carried out over the next few days.
More updates to follow.
