A magnitude 6.5
earthquake with a shallow depth of 5.1 miles (8.2 km) has claimed 102 lives in
Indonesia. The earthquake occurred on 6 December at 22:03 (UTC) and was located
3.6 miles (5.8 km) west of Pante Raja and 12.4 miles (19.9 km) south east of
Sigli in Indonesia.
The earthquake has also
left 136 people severely injured and another 616 with minor injuries. The death
toll is likely to increase as search and rescue efforts continue over the next
few days. It is believed that more victims may be buried in the rubble.
Despite the fears of the population
of a tsunami occurring as a result of the earthquake, no tsunami warning was
issued and there has been no reports of a tsunami occurring.
The sub-districts in Pidie
Jaya including Bandar Baru, Trienggadeng, Bandar Dua and Meureudu have been the
worst affected with reports claiming that 80% of these locations have been
affected.
Home, public buildings
such as schools, hospitals and mosques, businesses have collapsed or been
damaged. Infrastructure such as roads and electricity poles have also been
damaged. Power supply in some areas has been affected as a result of the damage
to the electricity infrastructure. Official
reports claim that 200 buildings have collapsed or have been severely damaged. One
hospital has also collapsed, leaving other hospitals in the region overwhelmed
with the injured.
According to the
Indonesian Government, 161 homes have been severely damaged, 105 shops, 14
mosques and 1 school and 1 hospital have been severely damaged or have
collapsed. Approximately 7500 people have also been left homeless by the
earthquake.
Relief efforts are
continuing with aid being provided by organisations such as the Indonesian Red
Cross. An immediate need of food and water, medical equipment, medicine and
medical services, shelter, water sanitation and hygiene and machinery to support
evacuation has been issued by the immediate assessment needs report.
The full scale of the
damage will become clear as a damage assessment is carried out over the next
week days.
