5 people have been killed by floods in Tanzania's
economical capital Dar es Salaam.
Torrential rainfall over the last few days has
caused floods in eastern Tanzania.
Hundreds have also been left homeless by the floods. An estimated 250 homes
have been affected in Buguruni Kwamnyamani. Infrastructure including roads has
been inundated by water making it difficult or impossible to travel.
54mm of rainfall over a period of 24 hours was
recorded in Zanzibar. Tanzania
Meteorology Agency (TMA) has issued warnings of further heavy rainfall over the
next few day. According to TMA there is a medium level of confidence that
rainfall exceeding 50mm in 24 hours will affect areas of Lindi, Mtwara, Pwani, Dar
es Salaam, Tanga and Unguja and Pemba
Islands.
The public has been advised to stay vigilant and
take necessary precautionary measures over the next few days.
Flooding is a common problem in Dar
es Salaam. Many authorities frequently pass the blame
on the public blocking drainage systems; however the drainage infrastructure is
not the only reason of frequent flooding in the city. Although TMA issues
weather warnings, no measures currently exist to warn the public of flooding or
how to prepare for possible floods.
